Organize Fridge With Easy to Grab Lunches
If you're here reading this then you probably have a disorganized fridge that is driving you crazy. A fridge that doesn't have an organized system can result in bad meal planning and more food waste, which can be a huge waste of money and incredibly bad for the environment.
Did you also know that a full to the brim fridge can make your food go off quicker, while a constantly empty fridge is bad for the running of the appliance?
Here are five cheap ways how to organize your fridge to prevent food waste that can transform and maximize your space.
Love these tips? Don't forget to pin it! 🙂
1. Save Plastic Food Containers
Do your mushrooms or grapes come in those clear plastic containers? Save them and reuse them as baskets for your fridge!
Nowadays, lots of people are buying plastic tubs to store their fruit and veggies neatly in their fridges. But a good way how to cheaply organize your fridge is to save the plastic tubs that you've already bought alongside the food at your supermarket. Once you've built a collection of these plastic tubs, you can organize the bottom drawer and shelves in your fridge using the containers.
I have about eight of these containers that I've saved, and I typically use them to store loose tomatoes, apples, oranges, peppers etc. It's an easy way to split up your food, maximize your space and make everything easy to find. Plus, if you're like me and always buy from the same place, your free storage containers will match – which looks even neater in your fridge!

2. Create Sections for Your Food
Another easy way of organizing your fridge is to create sections for certain foods. It's best to do this in a way that makes sense.
For example, fresh fish and meat should be kept on the bottom shelf of your fridge. This is because it's cooler there and it'll help your food last longer in your fridge. Storing your meats and fish together on the bottom shelf makes sense to keep it all together and prevent your food from going off quickly in the fridge.
Similarly, you can designate other areas of your fridge in a way that enables easy access to the things you need. As an example, I tend to keep my bread right next to the butter and my sandwich fillers on the middle shelf. It makes it so much easier to grab everything all at once, without having to rummage around different shelves and drawers. Plus, it can help you remember what sandwich fillers you've bought that week!
Designating sections of your fridge in a way that makes sense to you is an easy and cheap way to organize your fridge and prevent food waste.

3. Declutter
Decluttering is one of the biggest home improvement trends. It's cheap and makes a huge difference to your home!
Decluttering your fridge is no different. But having a trimmed-down fridge doesn't just create an appealing aesthetic. It can actually help prevent your food from going off quickly in the fridge.
This is because a fridge that's too full can block the airflows and filters, making your food turn bad quicker and your appliance more likely to break down. On the other end of the spectrum, an empty fridge can make it run less efficiently. The optimum capacity for a fridge is two thirds full. If your fridge is constantly jammed-packed with food, then it may be time to declutter.
Here are three questions to ask yourself to help you easily declutter your fridge:
– How often do you use it? Think of those condiments that you've only used once, could they be given away or thrown out?
– Does it need to be in the fridge? Think of chocolates or cakes that possibly don't need to be in the fridge
– When are you likely to eat it? If you've bought a meal that you're not planning to eat until the end of the week, consider freezing it and defrosting it when the fridge is emptier later in the week

4. Free Up the Door Space
If you're like me, your fridge door is full to the brim of stuff – including stuff that shouldn't be there. Before I used these cheap ways to organize my fridge, I was constantly battling with stuff falling out of the door shelves every time I opened the fridge.
Plus, I used to have my milk and eggs in there, too. But did you know that the door is the worst place to store your milk and eggs?
The reason it's so bad is because the door is the place most likely to experience fluctuations in temperature from frequent opening and closing. That's why your milk and eggs should actually be kept in the middle of the fridge, not the door.
But freeing up your door space can have more benefits. It can create more space to store other items, like sauces, soft cheeses, and sweet treats. I tend to use a few plastic containers (free ones from my food shopping that somehow fit the space perfectly!) to split everything up.
TIP: Did you know that you should keep your eggs in their original carton, not in an egg tray? This is because eggs are porous, and they can soak up bad smells in the fridge. However, keeping them in their cardboard boxes will prevent the odour released from rotting foods from getting to them.
5. Create an 'Eat Me First' Section
Another cheap way of organizing your fridge and preventing food from going off too quickly is by creating an 'eat me first' section. This is when you designate an area of your fridge, or one of your plastic containers, to food that needs to be eaten first.
Think about things like fruits, vegetables, herbs, or meats that won't last very long at all. Or things that you've opened and now need to consume in the day.
Having an 'eat me first' section in your fridge is a cheap and easy way to feel more organized and on top of what's in your fridge.
Let's get organizing!
